Funny that everyone criticises Nadya for having the octuplets - how come there is no naming and shaming of the doctor (And I have no doubt it is a HE) who KNEW she had 6 children and still implanted so many embryos? She didnt do it on her own.
I seriously hope that one of those kids beats the odds, grows up and cures fricking cancer that will shut "them" all up.

I do think that maybe Nadya is not quite balanced but at times I can relate to her, although do you really think she honestly expected to implant 6 embryos and get octuplets?

Has anyone thought that maybe her being unbalanced could be the result of growing up in a lonely only one child family with not enough loving connection to others???? Where is the criticism of the parents with ONE child?

I wish Nadya lived in Australia because she would not have to worry about how to feed her children or give them a decent education or pay for college. I think it is ridiculous that mothers have to live on food stamps and look for a job when they have small children - where do the children go when the mother is working for minimum wage?

Hi
I'm from Australia, have seven children and #8 due in August. The attitudes here are so contadictory. On the one hand society in general says that to have more than 3 you are irresponsible, ruining the planet, immoral, definitely uneducated and unable to get a REAL job OR they are children of convenience and you are having them "for the money" - hence the contradiction - We have a pro-family welfare system and at present there is a $5000 baby-bonus that you are paid from the Government when you have a baby in an effort to increase our population! There is also now as of this year a paid maternity scheme starting.
It is very frustrating. No-one is supportive of 'large families' and most tend to roll their eyes or respond with the myriad of negative and judgemental comments that I'm sure you've all heard. It seems that you are only 'allowed' to have 2 children and the baby bonus was created so you might be tempted to have one more 'for the country' BUT you are also expected to dump the children in the nearest child care centre 50hours a week (hence boosting employment) and return to the workforce full time so that you are actually 'contributing' to society.
The stigma associated with more than 3 children is ridiculous. As for religion, well that argument doesnt seem to fair well here at all. Yes having children are a blessing from God but apparently so is contraception once you have your standard 3 kids. My eldest has started at the local Catholic Highschool this year and they are just as judgemental as everyone else (Go figure?)
Besides my children are the future doctors, teachers, lawyers, nurses, chefs, etc - so whose taxes do they all think will be paying their way when they are old?

Well, with the whole global-warming/climate-change *awareness* inciting the call to sterilize yourself in an effort to save the planet... just as your husband asked, I ask, "For who?" These same people want to save the planet, yet I wonder if any of them thought of the ultimate gift they could give(in line with their extremist attitudes).... have they thought of eliminating their own impact? I really don't think so. There is an innate drive of self preservation in humans. And to answer the 'who' question, well, my 9th grader's Biology teacher asked a similar question as the focus of their study for one whole term this year. He asked, "Which species has the greatest right to life?" I never found out his answer, he hemmed and hawed through my questions.

So I wonder about environment extremists.... do they only want to tell people how to live (control issues in the guise of charity), or do they think the best way to preserve the planet for whatever species they deem as worthy is to stay alive and continue their agenda. I'm guessing they will all choose the second one.

*sigh*

And on the other hand, if we didn't have environmentalists, we would have someone on the other extreme vying for their own agenda.

Thanks for your posts about Nadya Suleman - while i totally don't agree with her purposefully choosing to bring children into the world without a dad - children need a mom AND a dad - and while i have problems with the moral/ethical quagmire which is reproductive technology (so many times more babies are destroyed than live in the quest for "just one perfect child") - i have to admire her for going back and getting all the embryos that were already created. Mother Jones had an article about the problems posed by the "leftover" embryos - children in tiny form, abandoned by those who paid a lot of money to "create" them -http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2006/07/souls-ice-americas-embryo-glut-and-wasted-promise-stem-cell-research
and i think that is why she is being attacked. The attacks are so vehement and baseless (she shops? well, doesn't the whole family have to eat?). I worry about her mental health, too - to be so vilified. In a way, she is seeking out the attention - but maybe it's more a sense of minimizing and trying to control the exposure - In any case, i have no problem with her going on welfare to raise these children. I would hate to see her bring more fatherless children into the family - but she has fourteen now who really really need her. And she needs support, not just attacks...
I have got all the comments too (we've "only" got seven) - and it's weird to see what crawls out of people's mouths :)... but i've got a husband who loves me, strong convictions, wonderful healthy children, and family support. Imagine not having any of those things! That girl needs prayer and kindness...

I'd hold up a lighter but the carbon emission people might get upset. Good words, well written.

Being a mere piker (9 kids), I look at the hooplah about Octomom and think, what's not being said but implied, that the responsible thing, would have been to kill most of these children in utero. (The real responsible thing would have been to implant only one or two, and to have screened the mom beforehand, but I digress).

When the crazy people start those lines, "Too many" which is often enough, say "It is no sacrifice to be surrounded by people that love you."

The sensational/freak stuff is what sells the ad space. Too bad they couldnt or wouldn't focus on
all the wonderful fun and love in larger families.
Some of the most ill mannered, over induldged children we know come from very small families --
raised as though the world revolves around them.
I truely feel sorry for all they are missing.
(and oddly they love to come to our house to play!!?? hmmmmm)
I'm glad my kids have the opportunity to have many siblings -- its an opportunity to be other focused -- opportunity of a lifetime -- one that can't be bought nor learned at the most expensive school.

thank you for your websites -- they are a great resource and encouragement.

You know, I'm frustrated that some of the angst towards octomom is being directed at large families. I read one article that said it would cost "millions and millions" to raise that many kids and I'm thinking, "HUH?" Another article claimed that there just isn't enough time in the day to have that many kids.

I'm not a fan of Nadya, but it's not just because she ended up with fourteen children. I don't think she was being wise to go back for even "just" a seventh when she wasn't able to care for the first six and when she couldn't provide her children with a father. Call me old-fashioned but I believe that children do best when they have both a mother and a father who love and care for them. Sure, there are single mothers (and sometimes fathers) who do the best they can, but usually they become single after they have their children, not before.

But while I don't think it's possible for Nadya to provide physically, financially, and emotionally for her 14 children, I do think that a mother and a father who are dedicated to their family can certainly take care of 12, 14, or even more. I don't think it takes "millions and millions" to do so, and I DO think there are plenty of hours in the day to meet all of their needs. Easy? No, but definitely possible.
